What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding is the term that describes the function of protecting adults and children from abuse or neglect and also includes measures to prevent vulnerable people from coming to harm in the first place.

Safeguarding is an essential part of any responsible organisation’s governance and practice. As churches, seeking to reflect the character and commands of Jesus, we want to do this to the best of our ability and operate in an exemplary manner within our communities.

Policy Statement

It is the policy of Solid Rock Church Havercroft to safeguard the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults by protecting them from neglect, physical, sexual and emotional harm. As churches, we are fully committed to safeguarding the wellbeing of our members and those entrusted to our care. Members of the church, paid staff and volunteers will at all times conduct themselves in a way that reflects the principles of the Christian church. They will show respect for and understanding of human rights, promoting an ethos of listening and ensuring the safety of all especially children and vulnerable adults.

The church will care for children and young people, and vulnerable adults and safeguard them by following good practices in relation to the following:

  • Safer Recruitment of workers and volunteers
  • Promoting good working practices
  • Training and supporting our workers in their role and in the protection of children and vulnerable people

What Are DBS Checks

The Disclosure and Barring Service helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. ... Basic DBS – the lowest level of disclosure which checks the Police National Computer for details of all current criminal convictions.

Any church volunteers deemed to have ‘substantial’ contact with children will now face DBS Checks. This includes, Workers who have specific roles or duties with children or adults at risk may be eligible for a DBS check. This covers volunteers. A child is defined as anyone under the age of 18.

An adult at risk is defined as anyone aged 18 or over who, due to disability, mental function, age, illness or traumatic circumstances, may not be able to take care of or protect themselves against the risk of significant harm, abuse, bullying, harassment, mistreatment or exploitation.

There are a number of roles within the church setting which would require a higher level of DBS check for those who frequently work with children as youth workers or children’s clubs volunteering on a weekly basis in a team without a designated leader or without a leader supervising the worker at all times.
